ADA LAUNCHES PODCASTS
Responding to increasing interest in new information delivery technologies, the American Dental Association in July launched a "pod-casting" service offering online audio programs on dental practice topics.

Podcasting is a method of distributing multimedia content such as audio programs over the Internet using the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) delivery format. The audio programs then can be played back on digital media players such as the Apple iPod (Apple, Cupertino, Calif.) or on a personal computer.

New dentists are the primary target audience for the ADA’s podcasts, but all practitioners should find them relevant and useful. Each podcast is approximately 20 minutes long, featuring a moderator and one or more subject matter experts.

Available and upcoming podcasts include these:

– "Internet Marketing" with Dr. Keith Rossein, president of International Dental Consultants, Malverne, N.Y., a partner in WebDentalMarketing.com, editor of Implant News & Views and a past speaker for the ADA Seminar Series;
– "Finding and Keeping the Patient" with Cathy Jameson, founder, president and chief executive officer of Jameson Management, Davis, Okla., an international dental lecture and consulting firm;
"Strategic Planning and Systems Development and Taxes and Business Planning" with Dr. Gary DeWood, resident faculty member at the Pankey Institute, Key Biscayne, Fla., and associate professor and director of the faculty practice at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, Memphis; and Dr. Dennis Munholand, visiting faculty member at the Pankey Institute and developer of the Revenue Goal Planner software.

The ADA’s podcasts are available through many major podcast directories, including iTunes ("www.apple.com/itunes"), Odeo ("www.Odeo.com") and Podfeed ("www.Podfeed.net"). Listeners can subscribe to the podcast feed to receive future titles automatically, listen to an individual podcast directly from ADA.org or save a podcast for later listening via a personal computer or a digital media player.

For more information about the ADA’s podcasts and tips on how to subscribe, visit "www.ada.org/goto/podcast".

APPLY FOR YOUR NPI
As of May 23, 2007, all health care providers will be required to include a national provider identifier (NPI) on electronic transactions.

The NPI is a 10-digit standard identification number that will replace currently used provider identification information—called "legacy" identifiers—such as dental plan–specific identifiers, license numbers and Social Security numbers.

While the NPI will be required on electronic transactions such as electronic claims, eligibility verifications, claims status inquiries and claims attachments, the ADA is encouraging all dentists to apply for NPIs.

Applying for an NPI is free and easy to do, according to ADA Department of Dental Informatics staff, which estimates the process to take 20 to 30 minutes. Dentists can visit "https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov" to submit an application.

For help with the process, go to "https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Help.do", e-mail "customerservice{at}npienumerator.com" or call 1-800-465-3203.

For more information from ADA.org, go to "www.ada.org/goto/npi". Questions, comments or concerns may be directed to "NPI{at}ada.org".
