I was encouraged to read Dr. Brodys comments regarding the importance of trust in the dentist-patient relationship. Like Dr. Brody, I believe that honest communication increases the quality of care, because patients are more likely to talk openly about their oral health concerns with a dental professional they trust. The suggestions I made in my column were intended to motivate readers to develop their own "conversation starters."
Over the years, I have encountered a surprising number of dentists who, admittedly, have trouble talking with patients. These doctors recognize that, by improving their communication skills, they can develop better relationships with their patients.
Dr. Brody and I concur that dentists should never be patronizing or insincere when communicating with patients. In more than 20 years of working with fellow dentists and suggesting the techniques outlined in my column, I frequently hear back from those who have enhanced their communication skills, and how those skills have benefited their patients and practices. Strong communications skills are a critical component of excellent care.
