As a 38-year practicing dentist, I guess it is fair to say I "remember" a previous era in clinical care. As such, I take offense to Drs. Frank Spear, Vincent Kokich and David Mathews "Summary" comments in their article, "Interdisciplinary Management of Anterior Dental Esthetics" (
JADA 2006;137: 1609
).
It is patently unfair of them to suggest that "in the past, the importance of esthetics was discounted in favor of concepts such as function, structure and biology." In the first place, any treatment that isnt based on those concepts will fail and, in the second place, esthetics was every bit as important then as it is today. Frankly, a lot of what is "cosmetic" today satisfies none of those concepts, including esthetics.
