CYBERNEWS

JADA ONLINE TRIAL PERIOD EXTENDED ONE MONTH
Due to the overwhelming response to the new online edition of The Journal of the American Dental Association launched last December, the open-access trial period for this feature will be extended one month, through March 31.

"The positive response this new service has received has been very gratifying," said Laura A. Kosden, publisher and associate executive director of the ADA’s Publishing Division. "To introduce as many visitors as possible to the rich features the online edition of JADA now offers, we decided to extend the introductory trial period by a month."

During its first month online, visitors to the new JADA portal downloaded some 32,000 full-text articles.

Developed in partnership with Stan-ford University’s HighWire Press, the new edition of JADA Online includes the full text of every issue of the journal dating back through 1995 along with a mix of abstracts and tables of contents dating back to 1966. Among its features are a superior set of search tools and advanced research capabilities, greater flexibility and "user friendliness" and specialized services such as e-mail alerts.

Beginning April 1, access to articles posted in the previous 12 months will be restricted to ADA members and JADA subscribers; other visitors will have the option to purchase access to these articles on an individual basis. Articles that have been online for more than 12 months will be open to all visitors.

NLM FUNDS DENTAL INFORMATICS SITE
Last December, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) awarded a grant of $280,000 to the Center for Dental Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine to develop an online community for dental informatics researchers.

Billed as "The Virtual, Global Community for Dental Informaticians," the new site will be developed by a diverse team of researchers in bioinformatics, oral health, engineering, library science and business.

As envisioned by the project team, the online community will facilitate dental informatics research by

– providing access for dental informatics researchers with limited resources to information on potential areas of study and project development;
– publishing background and contact information for potential collaborators and updates on other projects;
– driving the development of project ideas for peer review and tracking project progress;
facilitating communication among the small, diverse group of dental informatics researchers around the world.

"This new initiative is important because it provides a cross-disciplinary, worldwide and open forum for dental informatics research," said Dr. Titus Schleyer, assistant professor and director of Pitt’s Center for Dental Informatics and co-investigator for the project. "The online community will provide access to valuable information pertaining to key areas of study.

"It has the potential to leverage the scarce resources of dental informatics for the benefit of patients and the profession," added Dr. Schleyer, who also is JADA’s associate editor for informatics and technology.
