CYBERNEWS

WEB SITE WISDOM
Do you need help building a Web site for your practice, or are you looking to refresh your current site with new content and features? You needn’t look any further than your Association for assistance.

Develop a Dynamic Web Site for Your Practice is a new manual available from the ADA to help dentists take advantage of the power of the Internet to serve their current patients and help attract new ones. With 80 percent of all Americans who use the Internet—more than 110 million people—seeking out health care information online, it’s a safe bet that a presence on the Web will only continue to grow in importance over time.

The manual, conceived by the ADA Council on Dental Practice, can help you sort through your options for launching or updating a Web site, from basic features such as providing general information about a practice to advanced functionality that includes online appointment scheduling and billing.

In addition to helping you decide what information and tools you want to feature on your site, the manual also provides guidance on how to realize your plan, including site design and construction, effective content development, deployment and maintenance of your site, and promotion techniques.

Develop a Dynamic Web Site for Your Practice (item no. J697) is available from the ADA Department of Salable Materials for $39.95 for ADA members or $59.95 for nonmember dentists. For more information, ADA members can call Susan Barthel, manager of CDP marketing and seminar services, at the ADA’s toll-free number, Ext. 2927. To place an order, contact the ADA Catalog at 1-800-947-4746 or on the Internet at "www.adacatalog.org".

ARE YOU BLOCKING POP-UPS ON ADA.ORG?
If you are running pop-up blocking software on your computer, you may be missing out on all your Association’s Web site has to offer.

Pop-ups—extra Web browser windows that open automatically when visiting a Web site or selecting a hyperlink—are used extensively on the World Wide Web to display supplementary information, messages, advertising and other content. The Association’s Web site, ADA.org, employs pop-ups to display external Web sites, downloadable documents and forms.

Software applications or Web browser plug-ins designed to block pop-ups can prevent access to such content. Pop-up blocking software is available in stand-alone applications, as a component of Web browser toolbars available from Google, Yahoo!, MSN and others and through Internet service providers such as America Online and EarthLink.

Most pop-up applications include an option to selectively allow pop-ups from specific Web sites or compile a list of sites from which pop-ups are allowed. In many cases, holding down your computer’s Control ("Ctrl") key will disable pop-up blocking temporarily. When visiting the Association’s Web site, please ensure that pop-up blocking software you may be using is set to allow pop-ups from ADA.org.

If you’re not currently using pop-up blocking software but would like to learn about some of the options available, visit CNET.com’s software downloads and reviews page at "www.download.com" and search for "pop-up blockers."
