In his December JADA article, "Magnification in Dentistry: Useful Tool or Another Gimmick?", Dr. Gordon Christensen states that magnification assists all types of clinical dentists in producing higher-quality dentistry. I would extend this benefit to dental hygienists.
In the late 1980s, our periodontal practice started using manually adjustable ultrasonic units with modified tips for all periodontal maintenance. Shortly thereafter, I introduced my hygienists to the world of magnification from which I had been benefiting. They readily adapted. Our patients commented on how much more efficient and pleasant their periodontal maintenance appointments had become since they had experienced ultrasonics with the use of magnification.1
Dental hygienists can benefit from the use of magnification for whatever technique they use for periodontal maintenance.
