JADA ONLINE ENHANCEMENT FOR MEMBERS
If youve logged in for members-only content on the Associations Web site in the past, you will see a small lock symbol and a hyperlink named "PDF" following the title of each article in the current issue. Click on the "PDF" hyperlink to download the full text of an article without viewing the abstract of the article.
If you dont see the symbol or never have registered for members-only access to the Associations Web site, just follow the "log on to ADA.org" hyperlink under the issue date on the JADA landing page ("www.ada.org/goto/jada"). You will need your ADA member number to register.
When logging in for members-only access to ADA.org, you can choose either to have your log-in information saved in a cookie on your computer so you will be automatically logged in during future visits or to have your log-in expire when you finish your current visit to the site. Either method will provide you with direct full-text PDF access for articles from the current issue.
And remember, you still can access abstracts and download options for each article by following the hyperlinked title of the articlethe same way its worked since JADA Online launched in 2001.
THE SEARCHERS
However, recent research shows a second online endeavor that the majority of Internet users undertake several times a week, sometimes several times a day. Is it checking stock prices? Reading the news? Buying goods or services?
Those activities all take a back seat to using online search engines, according to a nationwide survey of 1,400 Internet users conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The project studies the impact of the Internet on American families, communities, education, the workplace and political life.
Among the 64 million Americans who are online on a typical day, about 38 million of them are using search engines, the Pew survey found. More than one-third of the searchers reported launching a search at least once a day, and an equal number told the Pew pollsters they "couldnt live without" Internet search engines.
Data collected by comScore Networks from the top 25 search engines for June of this year showed that the average Internet user performed 33 searches, contributing to a total of 3.9 billion searches conducted in that month alone. Some 87 percent of search-engine users reported they find the information they are seeking most of the time.
Among search engine options, Google remains the top choice, with a 47 percent share among those surveyed, followed by Yahoo! and MSN. And when information seekers find a search engine that works, they stick with it: nearly one-half reported using just a single one.
ADA members who have registered for members-only content on ADA.org now can gain quick access to full-text articles in portable document format, or PDF, from the current issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association without having to view the article abstract first.
If theres a "killer app" of the Internetan application that defines the most common, beneficial use of the mediummost people probably would agree its electronic mail.
