Author’s response

I appreciate Dr. Lee’s interest in the subject and respect his views on this perplexing subject.

I thank Dr. Lee for adding to my comments on the subject. In my opinion, microbial contamination of cut tooth surfaces is another of the potential reasons for pulpal death initiated during the fixed prosthodontic procedure.

I agree that adequate provisional restorations are mandatory to preserve pulpal vitality. Unfortunately, from time to time, all of us have difficulty making provisional restorations that seal well, and placing the final restorations before the provisional restorations begin to leak and degenerate. Since provisional restorations are made by staff people in most offices, these important people should be advised of this continuing challenge.
