Author’s response

Over the years I have seen several patients referred to the Dental Implant Center at Montefiore Medical Center for consultation following implant placement utilizing only infiltration anesthesia. Although infiltration anesthesia theoretically offers a safety factor, as the patient should be able to inform the surgeon when the inferior alveolar nerve is being approached, it has been our experience that implants placed utilizing only infiltration anesthesia have not taken advantage of the available bone as the patients reported "sensation" after minimum osteology preparation.

I would welcome seeing data from Dr. Harris on the number of implants she has placed utilizing infiltration anesthesia, and how close these were placed to the inferior alveolar nerve without altered sensation.
