APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS/AWARDS

Dr. William R. Birdwell, Bryan, Texas, was named 2001 Texas Dentist of the Year by the Texas Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Edward Bressman, Millburn, N.J., was honored for 60 years of continuous dental service by the Newark Beth Israel Hospital Medical Center.

Dr. Sebastian G. Ciancio, Buffalo, N.Y., won the Gold Medal Award from the American Academy of Periodontology. Other winners are Dr. Robert Ferris, Altamonte Springs, Fla., the Presidential Award; Dr. Myron Nevins, Swamp-scott, Mass., the Master Clinician Award; and Dr. Terry Rees, Dallas, the William J. Gies Award. Dr. Michael G. Newman, San Anselmo, Calif.; Dr. Rees; and Dr. Edward F. Sugarman, Atlanta, each won a Fellowship Award. Dr. Gary C. Armitage, San Francisco; Dr. Carole N. Hildebrand, Philadelphia; and Dr. Michael P. Rethman, Kaneohe, Hawaii, received Special Citations.

Dr. Jack F. Conley, Los Angeles, was honored as Alumnus of the Year by the University of Southern California Dental Alumni Association.

Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, San Francisco, received the 2001 Award of Merit from the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Dugoni also won the William John Gies Award from the American College of Dentists.

Dr. Lawrence W. Farrell, Chicago, was elected as a board member of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

Dr. A. Thomas Indresano, Milwaukee, was appointed chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of the Pacific.

Dr. Gary Inman, Eliza-bethtown, Ky., was installed as president of the Southern Association of Orthodontists. Other officers are Dr. Wayne Bauknight, Lancaster, S.C., president-elect; Dr. David Williams, Columbia, Tenn., secretary-treasurer; and Dr. Michael Rogers, Augusta, Ga., trustee. Dr. Richard Garlitz, Hickory, N.C., is immediate past president. Dr. R.R. Reed, Ocala, Fla.; Dr. Lee E. Hershon, Charleston, S.C.; Dr. Richard Williams, Southaven, Miss.; and Dr. Chris Mattingly, Louisville, Ky., were appointed to the board of directors. Dr. Kenneth D. Owen, Charlotte, N.C., won the Oren Oliver Distinguished Service Award; and Dr. William L. Haltiwanger, Rockingham, N.C., won the Citizenship Award.

Dr. G. William Knight, Chicago, was appointed assistant dean for patient care at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.

Dr. Vincent Liberto, Metairie, La., was elected president of the Association for Continuing Dental Education. Other officers are Dr. Sue Corbett, Seattle, president-elect; and Dr. James Anderson, San Francisco, vice president. Dr. Eugene Pantera, Hamburg, N.Y., is immediate past president.

Dr. Ivar A. Mjör, Gaines-ville, Fla., was conferred an honorary doctorship from the faculty of odontology of Göteborg University, Sweden.

Dr. Charles M. Simons, Kokomo, Ind., was elected president of the U.S.A. Section of the International College of Dentists. Other officers are Dr. Carl G. Lundgren, Lawndale, Calif., president elect; Dr. Robert L. Bartheld, McAlester, Okla., vice president; Dr. John B. Lathrop, West Chester, Pa., treasurer; and Dr. Robert L. Smith, Little Rock, Ark., editor. Dr. Richard A. Shick, Grand Blanc, Mich., is immediate past president. Dr. Thomas A. Clary, Auburn, N.Y.; Dr. William R. Patteson, Baltimore; Dr. Carl C. Collier, Norman, Okla.; and Dr. Newell E. Warr, Salt Lake City, were elected as regents. Dr. Charles L. Siroky, Phoenix, will represent the U.S.A. Section of the ICD.
