Thank you to Dr. Meskin for promoting The Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry ("Hidden Treasure," May JADA). As a collector of dental history for over 35 years, it is good to see that not all of our history is stored in back rooms.
It shames me to see courses in dental history placed on the back burner. Todays young dentists have very little knowledge of our history. There is little appreciation of our proud past or of the courageous steps previous dentists have made.
Thank God some of the schools are reversing these trends by bringing out our history from the back rooms. Marquette University has plans for a dental history display in the main area of its new dental school. The University of Illinois at Chicago has just opened the Kottemann Gallery of Dentistry.
I hope others will follow and that dental history courses will make a comeback.
