Dr. Clark C. Browne, Birmingham, Ala., received the Oren A. Oliver Distinguished Service Award from the Southern Association of Orthodontists. Dr. James Caveney, Wheeling, W.Va., Dr. Robert Helmholdt, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Dr. Richard Svitzer, Vinton, Va., received the Citizenship Award; and Dr. James Vaden, Cookeville, Tenn., was honored as immediate past president of the American Board of Orthodontics by the SAO.
Dr. Robert L. Merin, Woodland Hills, Calif., was the dental alumnus of the year of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry.
Dr. Erling Johansen, Needham, Mass., was honored by Tufts University School of Dental Medicine with an endowed chair in his name, the Erling Johansen Chair in Dental Research.
Dr. Joan A. Phelan, Centerport, N.Y., was named chair of the Department of Oral Pathology of New York University.
