Dr. Meskin in "The Perfect Patient" (October JADA) is concerned about the ethics of using "human subjects for the purpose of discovering incompetence" on state board exams. Keep in mind that the graduates who fail these exams are at the very apex of their skills, having worked their way up to their current level of incompetence through four years of patient treatment.
Im confused. Does Dr. Meskin suggest that they not work on live patients until after completion of four years of dental school and a board exam? Or perhaps by dispensing with the exams we could rest easy, not knowing they were incompetent.
