We wholeheartedly endorse Dr. Crolls observation of the salient significance of Dr. Simonsens contributions to conservative restoration of teeth. His pioneering work on the effectiveness of sealants and resin restorations constitutes one of the outstanding advances in patient care during the last quarter of the 20th century, and knowledge of his highly meritorious achievements is common within our profession.
We regret our oversight in not referencing the development of the preventive resin concept. However, our articles focus on caries removal techniques for minimally invasive dentistry perspective looked forward into the 21st century, not intending a review of the literature or an historical account of the various restoration options appropriate to minimally invasive dentistry. Certainly any historical perspective is bound to acknowledge Dr. Simonsens seminal accomplishments.
Our thanks to Dr. Croll for these historical references. We strongly agree that concepts of minimally invasive treatment should continue to be disseminated to the benefit of the patients we serve.
