I was pleased to read your editorial in April JADA. It was right on! We certainly do need more (qualified) faculty.

You are so right. The academic life provides fantastic rewards, including the privilege of sharing our knowledge with the future men and women of our profession. Beginning in academia at UCLA in 1971 and continuing to this day has given me a very fulfilling professional career. For me, it also included the honor of being dean at Creighton University dental school for 10 years.

Your editorial mentions recruiting private practitioners into academia. This is a great idea. To add to that, while I was dean, we began actively recruiting from the military, a very fruitful area from which to recruit. These professionals have had spectacular training, and those we recruited have contributed immensely to our program and to our school’s mission.
